Meet Miss Dopp!

Meet the Team!

Hello students and families! I am so excited to be your 5th grade teacher this year! I hope you are finding this site to be helpful - please feel free to contact me with concerns or comments at any point! This is my ninth full year teaching at Forts Ferry and my eleventh year working in North Colonie. I graduated from Marist College (Go Red Foxes!) in 2010 with a degree in psychology and Elementary/Special Education and a minor in History.  In December of 2012, I earned my Master's degree from Russell Sage in Literacy/Digital Literacy and Technology. In my spare time, I love to read, spend time with my family (that's my sister in the picture with me!), cheer on the Yankees & Patriots, and travel. I'm looking forward to a great year!

1. What can I do to help my child have a successful year in 5th grade?
Fifth grade is an exciting, challenging, jam-packed year! It is also a big year in terms of turning responsibility and accountability for completing work over to the students. With that said, your support and guidance is still vital in helping your child to succeed! At home, you can help by reading with your child, practicing math facts and spelling words daily, and working with your child to find an organizational strategy that works for him/her. This will not only be helpful in 5th grade but also as a life skill! Please encourage your child to set aside a time and location for homework and studying that will minimize distractions and allow him/her to achieve his/her very best! In addition to the major content areas, we as a 5th grade team will be focusing on organization, responsibility, and helping each child to strive for his/her very best. Your support with these goals at home is greatly appreciated!

2. How do I know what's upcoming in my child's class?
Information about events, tests, quizzes, and assignments will be written in your child's planner as soon as we know about them!  Students will also utilize their Google Calendars; these will automatically update whenever a teacher adds an assignment to Google Classroom.  In addition, this website will be updated frequently to let you know what we're working on in the classroom.

3. When does my child have specials?
Every day! Please check the complete schedule here or on our home page.  Band students should remember their instruments on Tuesdays and orchestra students should remember their instruments on Wednesdays.  Also, all students should remember sneakers for P.E. days and library books on Day 5!

4. How can I get a copy of the 5th grade classroom expectations?
A copy of our classroom expectations can be downloaded from the link on our home page.

5. What supplies does my child need?
A copy of the supply list was sent home from the school. An additional copy can be downloaded here.

6. What do I do if my child is absent?
If your child is absent, a "While You Were Out" packet of missed work will be created for him/her that can be sent home with a sibling, brought to the office for pickup, or held in the classroom until he/she returns. Please call the office to confirm the student's absence and send in a note upon his/her return. Students will have the same number of days as they missed to complete missed work (ie. If the student misses one day, he/she has one additional day after they return to complete the work.)

In the event of a prolonged absence, your child's teacher will contact you with information about how to access the material being presented in class.

7. Is there snack in 5th grade?
Yes! We will have snack each day. We are a nut-free room, so please refrain from sending in a snack that contains peanuts as students will not be able to enjoy those in the classroom.

8. Can I send in treats for my child's birthday?
Unfortunately, this year we will be unable to celebrate birthdays with treats as we have in the past.  We will still acknowledge your child's birthday in class and make the day as special as possible for him/her!
